In September 1942, Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita launched a Yokosuka E14Y floatplane from the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-25 and dropped incendiary bombs on the forests near Brookings, Oregon, in an attempt to ignite devastating wildfires on American soil. The attack failed to cause widespread destruction, but it left a lasting mark on the community. Twenty years later, in an extraordinary twist of World War II history, the very town he had targeted invited him back as the grand marshal of its 1962 Azalea Festival. The controversial invitation divided local residents, particularly Pacific War veterans who struggled with the idea of welcoming a former enemy. Supported by Oregon Governor Mark Hatfield, the Brookings Jaycees moved forward with their remarkable plan for reconciliation. Fujita accepted the invitation and returned to Oregon carrying a deeply personal gift: his family's 400-year-old samurai sword, which he presented to the town as a symbol of remorse, peace, and friendship. This WWII documentary explores the Japanese bombing of mainland America, the Lookout Air Raids, the extraordinary story of Nobuo Fujita, and the transformation of a former enemy into an honorary citizen of Brookings. From the daring submarine-launched bombing mission over Mount Emily to the emotional reunion in 1962 and Fujita's later efforts to build lasting friendships between Japan and the United States, discover a remarkable chapter of Pacific War history that reveals how the legacy of war can become a story of forgiveness and reconciliation.
