A Peaceful Afternoon Stroll Through the Heart of Kalamaria, Thessaloniki
Welcome to our walkthrough of Kalamaria, one of the most vibrant and upmarket municipalities in Thessaloniki, Greece! In this quiet afternoon tour, we focus on Kalamaria’s main gathering hub, walking through its spacious central pedestrian walkway towards the iconic Church of Metamorphosis (Transfiguration of the Saviour) and out into the open main square, home to the municipal council building (Demarcheio). Kalamaria carries a deep and fascinating history, with origins dating back to the Byzantine era—when its name was believed to derive from "Kali Meria" (Good Side) or the Byzantine administrative region "Captaincy of Kalamaria"—and a major transformation in the 1920s when thousands of Greek refugees from Asia Minor and Pontus resettled here, shaping its rich cultural identity. Along the pedestrian zone, we also pass the Melina Mercouri Municipal Theatre, a key cultural center named after Greece’s legendary former Minister of Culture. Travelling to and from central Thessaloniki is now easier than ever thanks to the newly opened Kalamaria underground metro extension, connecting the area directly to the rest of the city. While this video captures the central meeting point during a peaceful afternoon, this hub is normally bustling with people every day, filled with boutique shops, lively cafes, and popular restaurants. This main walkway is only the beginning of what Kalamaria offers, as the municipality extends all the way down to a scenic coastline featuring a bustling marina, seaside roads, seafood taverns, and waterfront lounge bars.
