VANISHED 1950s Winter Pieces Every Woman Owned (That Are Coming Back in Style)
In January 1955, the wind off Lake Erie didn’t forgive a careless seam. Yet a woman could step out of a brick house in Cleveland in a skirt and heels, walk six blocks to the bus stop, and stay genuinely warm—with fewer than twenty pieces in her closet.
In this episode of Eleanor's Vault, we open a cedar hall closet from 1955 to examine twelve vanished 1950s winter pieces almost every woman owned—from aluminum-sprayed Milium satin linings and tailored wool swing coats to high-heel rubber overshoes, silk headscarves, quilted bed jackets, and a wooden tool forgotten at the bottom of a floral hatbox. Along the way, we discover why modern fashion houses and luxury runways are quietly bringing these mid-century winter solutions back into style.
Did your mother or grandmother keep any of these winter pieces in her hall closet—or do you still have a pair of wooden glove stretchers in a drawer today? Share your memories in the comments below.
