Narrow lanes barely wide enough for two people, open drains running alongside workshops producing leather goods, textiles and recycled plastics, children playing in alleys between factories running twelve hours a day. Dharavi is not just a place where people survive it's a place where a billion dollar informal economy runs twenty four hours a day in conditions that would be unimaginable in any other city of comparable wealth. The gap between Mumbai's ambitions and its reality is visible on every single street here. Mumbai is India's financial capital and most populous city, home to around 21 million people in the greater metropolitan area. An estimated 40% of Mumbai's population lives in informal settlements around 7 to 9 million people without adequate access to clean water, sanitation or secure housing.
