A machine learning model gets 99% accuracy on the training data.
Sounds perfect, right?
But then you give it completely new data… and suddenly the performance drops to 68%.
So what went wrong?
In this video, we’ll deliberately build a machine learning model that learns too much—and watch what happens when learning turns into memorization. Then we’ll go in the opposite direction and see what happens when a model is too simple to learn the underlying pattern.
Through a hands-on Python experiment in Google Colab, we’ll explore:
🔹 What does it really mean for a model to generalize?
🔹 How is learning different from memorizing?
🔹 What exactly is overfitting?
🔹 What is underfitting, and how can you recognize it?
🔹 How does model complexity affect performance?
🔹 Why can a single train-test split sometimes give us a misleading picture?
🔹 How does K-Fold Cross-Validation solve this problem?
🔹 Why should we look at both mean and standard deviation?
🔹 How can training and testing scores help diagnose a model?
🔹 What is the correct role of the final test set?
🔹 What are the 5 fatal mistakes people make during model evaluation?
🔹 How do bias and variance relate to underfitting and overfitting?
We’ll also introduce completely random noise features into our dataset and see whether an overly complex model can start finding patterns that aren’t actually meaningful.
By the end of the video, you should be able to look at a model’s training and testing performance and answer one important question:
Is my model actually learning… or is it simply memorizing what it has already seen?
💻 Everything is demonstrated hands-on using Python + Scikit-Learn + Google Colab.
