The Oldest Complex Life on Earth Is Pressed Into a Canadian Cliff — 565 Million Years Old

Ancient Canada holds one of the most extraordinary fossil sites on Earth. At Mistaken Point, Newfoundland, 565-million-year-old Ediacaran fossils preserve some of the oldest known communities of large, complex life ever discovered. Long before dinosaurs, fish, or even the Cambrian Explosion, strange organisms lived on a deep seafloor off what is now Canada. At Mistaken Point, thousands of these ancient life forms were suddenly buried by volcanic ash, preserving entire communities exactly where they lived. Discovered in 1967 by geologist Shiva Balak Misra, the fossil surfaces reveal mysterious organisms known as rangeomorphs — large, fractal-shaped life forms with no mouth, gut, eyes, limbs, or known modern descendants. Some reached nearly two metres tall and may have absorbed nutrients directly through their bodies in the darkness of the Ediacaran ocean. These ancient Canadian fossils have helped scientists understand what life looked like before recognizable animals appeared. The site also preserves evidence of how some of these organisms reproduced and how entire ecosystems existed hundreds of millions of years before the first dinosaurs.
