For nineteen years Rosalie Prewitt bought paper savings bonds out of her paycheck at a dairy in Kelso Bend. A hundred and fifty dollars every two weeks, four hundred and eight bonds, sixty-one thousand of her own money that grew to $86,450. She never kept them at home. They lived in her aunt Marcella's fireproof box, behind the canned tomatoes, because Marcella had kept the family's papers since before Rosalie was born.
The theft announced itself as a tax bill. A notice arrived saying Rosalie owed $4,918 on savings bond interest, and interest only comes due when a bond is cashed. Three hundred and ninety-nine bonds had been redeemed across nineteen quiet visits to one branch, in batches small enough to be boring, and the cash had become inventory on her cousin Dallas's used car lot.
Marcella had sworn to the federal government that the bonds were destroyed in a basement flood. Her house has no basement. The claim was notarized at a pharmacy counter on an afternoon Rosalie spent four hundred miles away taking a certification exam, and the forged signature carried a middle initial Rosalie has never had in her life.
What Rosalie had was sixty-one photographs she took in 2016 after a fire scare, every serial number on every bond, and a credit union fraud analyst who explained that a bond paid on a forged signature was never legally paid at all. No lawsuit. One envelope, forty-one pages, and the bank that stamped the guarantee gets to go collect.
The twist was on page three, in a place nobody reads, where a second real signature had pledged something that was never his to pledge. The flatbeds came on a Thursday.
