So I'm slightly embarrassed because I didn't know this video was on Public until someone recently brought it up to me 😅 but I thought I'd swallow my cringe and leave it up here in case anyone wanted to see a UChicago video profile that worked!
~tips from a UChicago admissions counselor~
During an accepted students day I actually got to meet the admissions counselor that reviewed and accepted my application and he seemed just as starstruck to meet me as I was to meet him!
It turned out that he remembered my video specifically for its spontaneity, sincerity, and un-scriptedness (is that a word, uh). The admissions counselor couldn't stress enough the importance of including information in the video profile that was not already included in your common application/writing supplement... this is your chance to talk about the fun stuff, what makes you unique! (not the multitude of honor societies you are apart of)
Though my video was a product of ~forced~ spontaneity due to a fast approaching deadline, its raw nature is what drew my admissions counselor attention. He seemed to prefer a video of nonsensical conversation with oneself to one of someone mundanely reciting scripted sentences.
In summary:
• be spontaneous, don't use a script (sometimes, however, it's nice to have an idea of what you might like to talk about... just don't go too crazy)
• don't be redundant... use this opportunity to tell the admissions staff something about yourself they don't already know from your written application
And lastly
• be yourself, not a version of yourself you think admissions wants to see
Good luck with your applications everyone! Maybe I'll see you around campus next year 👀
p.s. I was absolutely sure I had next to no chance of being accepted, yet here we are UChicago ‘23. So apply! No matter what you think your chances are, you never know whose interest you might just trigger on the other side. Trust me, grades, extracurriculars, and scores aren’t everything.
