When tribes were forced west, a powerful curse of "swift punishment" was allegedly placed on the valley by Native American leadership (often attributed to Chief Little Turtle or Chief Red Turtle) against anyone who dared disturb the land. For over a century, settlers blamed this curse for mysterious deaths, baffling murders, and horses that terrifiedly refused to cross the historic 1877 Devil's Backbone Bridge.
