ای رستخیز ناگهان وی رحمت بی‌منتها ای آتشی افروخته در بیشهٔ اندیشه‌ها O sudden resurrection, O endless mercy. O fire lit in the thicket of thoughts. The first ghazal of Rumi's Divan-e Shams (غزل ۱), sung in Persian with English subtitles. It is addressed to God from the first word to the last, and it never once describes Him. Every line is an image of what He does instead — a key turning in a prison, the sun veiled behind cloud, a thought rising in the chest and adorning itself, a scheme cast over Rome and Zanzibar. And then it stops mid-breath: خامش که بس مستعجلم، رفتم سوی پای علم کاغذ بنه بشکن قلم، ساقی درآمد الصلا Silence — I am in great haste, I have gone toward the foot of the banner.
