Time and Place: Cincinnati, January 8, 1953 Abstract: The lecture “Values in Psychoanalysis” is the second of two lectures Fromm presented in January 1953 at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. After some comments to the topic of this lecture Fromm first talks about some implicit value statements in Freud when he speaks of sexuality and social pressure. Also Freud’s application of the Enlightenment motto “dare to know” and the Socratic principle of knowing oneself are value guided. A particularly important value in psychoanalysis is the enormous amount of time involved in changing. This stands in complete contrast to the acceleration of all processes. Values can hardly be avoided in psychoanalysis, as Fromm illustrates using the example of Artie Shaw and another he witnessed. The decisive factor, however, is what is meant by judging when evaluating. The last part of the lecture is devoted to the main question of how mental health issues are evaluated and what role conscience plays in this. – The lecture (52’) was given at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati (Ohio) on January 8, 1953.
