In this video, historian Rana Safvi traces the fall of Shahjahanabad and Bahadur Shah Zafar's surrender at Humayun's Tomb in September 1857. Drawing on contemporary Urdu accounts, including Ghalib's Dastanbu and Zaheer Dehlvi's Dastan-e-Ghadar, this video uncovers what the city's residents witnessed as British forces broke through Kashmiri Darwaza, and the decisions the emperor made in the days that followed. Delhi had been under siege for four months before British forces entered the city on 14 September 1857. This video traces the full arc: the breach at Kashmiri Darwaza, the killings that followed inside the walled city, Bahadur Shah Zafar's last night in the Red Fort, and his journey to Humayun's Tomb, where he was captured on 20 September. Key Historical Highlights Covered: 1. The Fall of Shahjahanabad: On 14 September 1857, British forces breached the Kashmiri Darwaza after a four-month siege and entered the city, beginning a period residents later remembered simply as qayamat. 2. The Massacre in the City: Contemporary accounts describe entire households killed, including calligrapher Mohammad Amir Mir Panjakash, Delhi Akhbaar editor Maulvi Mohammad Baqar, and Delhi College teacher Maulvi Imam Baksh Sahbai. 3. The Emperor's Farewell: On the night of 19 September, Bahadur Shah Zafar sent his daughter Kulsoom Zamani Begum away and prayed for the safety of Delhi's Hindus and Muslims alike. 4. The Stop at Nizamuddin Dargah: Before fleeing, Bahadur Shah Zafar entrusted a relic of the Prophet's hair, held by the Timurid dynasty since Sultan Yildirim Bayazid, to the dargah's caretakers. 5. Betrayal and Surrender: Ilahi Baksh and Rajab Beg revealed the emperor's location to the British despite Bakht Khan's urging to keep fighting; Bahadur Shah Zafar surrendered to Major Hodson at Humayun's Tomb on 20 September. Welcome! I'm Rana Safvi, a historian, author and storyteller dedicated to preserving India's rich, composite history, Sufism and shared cultural heritage. Here you will find stories you might not have heard before & also meticulous research, authentic translations, & authoritative insights. With a master's in medieval history from AMU, I work closely with Urdu texts, including 19th-century accounts I've translated into English such as Sir Syed Ahmad Khan's Asar-us-Sanadid. Across ten books from the Delhi Trilogy (Where Stones Speak) to In Search of the Divine, I bring the stones, monuments and soul of the subcontinent to life: its Sufism, its poetry, the spirituality and beauty of Islam, and our shared Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb. My hope is simply that we understand one another a little better and fall in love with this composite culture we share. 📚 Explore all my books: 1) https://www.amazon.com/s?k=rana+safvi...
