Between hotel doors, bright sidewalks and long roads out of town, Meet Me Without the Ring imagines a young America full of stylish nights, open possibilities and feelings that have not quite settled into certainty. It is romantic without losing the bustle of the world around it.
The sound is original 1950s-inspired rock and roll, doo-wop, rockabilly and crooner music, carried by a warm male lead, close vocal harmonies, early rock-and-roll rhythm, upright bass, piano and twangy guitar. Narrow mono tape character, gentle saturation and a lightly swinging groove keep it rooted in the era without pretending to be an archival recording.

Lyrics:
[Intro]
(Shoo-bop, shoo-bop, ba-da...)
Neon on the chapel, silver on the street
(Shoo-bop, shoo-bop...)
Everybody's waiting, but my hand won't touch the door
[Verse 1]
The Little White Chapel glowed
on Las Vegas Boulevard
Your Ford convertible idled by
its chrome bright as a dime
Your mother pinned my veil in place
Your father held the door
The preacher checked his pocket watch
while both our families watched
[Pre-Chorus]
I slid the diamond from my hand
and set it on your dash
The red neon crossed the stone
and made the dashboard flash
Come back tomorrow, just your hands
no crowd, no preacher's vow
If you still want me, say it then
Don't say it for them now
[Chorus]
Meet me without the ring
(Oh-oh, without the ring)
Meet me under neon light
If you want my hand, come back for me
Tomorrow night, just you and me
Meet me without the ring
or don't come back tonight
[Verse 2]
You named the room above the store
the job your uncle lined up
The banker's note, the winter coal
the house they'd set us up in
You kissed my cheek, then checked the clock
then looked toward the chapel door
I knew you wanted shelter, boy
and I was just the roof
[Chorus]
Meet me without the ring
(Oh-oh, without the ring)
Meet me under neon light
If you want my hand, come back for me
Tomorrow night, just you and me
Meet me without the ring
or don't come back tonight
[Verse 3]
Your sister dropped her bouquet
your mother shook her head
My father took me by the arm
and led me down the steps
I left the flowers on the seat
the veil beside the door
The red sign blinked above us
I would not walk inside
[Bridge]
The chapel killed its sign at midnight
and the boulevard went blue
You left the ring beside the keys
and drove where the desert blew
I watched the morning buses roll
through curtains striped with gold
Then your Ford rolled up beside the curb
and your bare knuckles knocked twice
[Chorus 2]
You met me without the ring
(Oh-oh, without the ring)
You met me under neon light
You took my hand and chose me first
No father's house, no banker's key
You met me without the ring
and I walked inside with you
[Outro]
(Shoo-bop, shoo-bop, ba-da...)
The chapel bell rang out at noon
the neon slept till night
I walked through that little white door
with your bare hand in mine
