Half your Thanksgiving groceries are cheapest right now. The rest aren't.

The store would love you to buy it all in one big trip the week of Thanksgiving. That's the trip with the bare shelves and the long lines. I buy mine in five small trips instead, starting this week, and every one of the seventeen things on my list goes in the cart on the day it's cheapest or keeps best. The last three I don't buy until the Friday after.
I cooked the Thanksgiving lunch in a school cafeteria for thirty years, and you can't feed six hundred children in one trip. So we bought in order. I still do.
What's in here:
trip one, from your own kitchen: the freezer bread bag that becomes your dressing, the scrap bag that becomes your broth, and the sniff test for your sage and nutmeg
trip two, the first week of November: potatoes, onions in an old nylon stocking the way my mother kept them, apples, the November 1st squash markdown, the pie pair, and gravy made three weeks early from turkey wings
trip three, two weeks out: the turkey deal and the fine print that can sell you a pound of salt water, cafeteria yeast rolls you bake and freeze ahead, why older eggs peel clean, and one bag of cranberries
three things I never put in the Thanksgiving cart
trip four, Thanksgiving week: celery, and almost nothing else
the Friday after: Earl's sensible Friday, a second turkey for Christmas, marked down cranberries for the whole year, and the holiday end of the aisle
Keepers early. Wilters late. And let Friday come to you.

Now tell me down below: what did you run out of last Thanksgiving morning? Everybody runs out of something.
Waste not, want not. It still works.
