In this episode of Death by Burning, we sit down with Dr Subhash Challa, founder and CEO of Physical AI leader SenSen Networks, who went from failing his first year of university near Hyderabad to the Harvard Robotics Lab—and then spent the next two decades trying to bring sophisticated technology down from the academic “temple” and into the real world. Subhash’s heresy is that the laboratory isn’t where technology proves itself. The world is the laboratory when it comes to turning the sensor and AI paradigm on its head. He explains how his revolutionary work in data fusion—combining multiple imperfect sensors so their errors cancel each other out—escaped defence and robotics and became the foundation for SenSen and its AI for Good Smart City initiatives. Along the way, we get into the wisdom derived from pitching a car park manager, leaving the “publication factory,” losing an entire team overnight, and keeping a company alive for a decade before it could make money. Then we turn to the city. You can add ten floors to an apartment building, but you can’t add another metre of curb. Subhash explains why cities need real-time intelligence about the physical world, why LLMs alone can’t provide it, and how AI can potentially increase safety while protecting privacy. For Subhash, the choice about what technology becomes ultimately rests with us humans. 00:00 Cold open 00:58 Welcome to Death by Burning 02:38 From Tangutur to Harvard 08:42 What data fusion actually is 15:21 Come down from your temple 20:11 A Sony Handycam vs a $30,000 camera 22:47 The real laboratory of the world 26:15 Leaving the publication factory 29:25 Losing the team overnight 34:57 What cities can't see 38:55 Why the curb is undervalued 43:44 SenOps and physical AI 47:21 Why LLMs can't solve the physical world 51:21 Curb intelligence 53:30 AI for good, and privacy 56:51 The choice is with the humans 58:24 Models learning from their own output 1:00:15 What changes a city, and losing battles Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1Gts...
