The Dark Story of Rolls-Royce: Refused the Sky by His Own Company, the Founder DIED in It The official story is a lunch in Manchester. A lord's son with money and a mechanic with none shake hands and build the best car in the world. That is the version on the brass plaques. But six years later one of them was dead. On July 12, 1910, at a seaside air show near Bournemouth, the tail of Charles Rolls's Wright Flyer came apart over a crowded grandstand. He was the first Briton killed in a powered aircraft. Years earlier he had asked his own company to build an engine for the sky. The answer was no. His partner, Henry Royce, collapsed the next year and ran the firm for two decades from a sickroom, cared for by a nurse. The company that refused Rolls went on to build the Eagle, the Merlin and the jet engines that still carry his name first. And in 1998 the name itself was sold in a deal where nobody got the whole thing. It all comes back to a pilot's license. Certificate number two.
