Lauren Graham Reveals the Gilmore Girls Story Line She Felt Was ‘Hard to Justify’

Lauren Graham is taking another look at one of Gilmore Girls’ most divisive story lines, admitting that even she questioned the decision to separate Lorelai Gilmore from her daughter Rory. During an appearance on Christine Taylor and David Lascher’s Hey Dude… The ‘90s Called! podcast, Graham discussed the season 5 and 6 storyline in which Lorelai and Rory became estranged after Rory decided to take time away from Yale University. “It was hard to play,” Graham admitted. “I remember asking [series cocreator Amy Sherman-Palladino], I was like, ‘I don’t think people like this and … it’s hard to justify.’” Graham said the conflict felt “out of character” for both Lorelai and Rory. She recalled Sherman-Palladino explaining that their relationship could not remain “idyllic” forever, particularly as the series continued to embrace more dramatic storylines.
