New York City in 1911, filmed that year. Real archive footage and photographs, with every source named on screen. This is the first film of Sepia Cities: one city, one year, and the people who were standing in it. In 1911 New York had the tallest building on earth, a brand-new public library open to anyone who walked in, and a factory fire that killed a hundred and forty-six workers in half an hour, on the corner of Washington Square. Almost every building in this film is still standing. Nobody in it is. Every number on screen carries its source. Where the sources disagree, we say so. 1911 or today - which New York would you live in? Tell me in the comments. I read them. CHAPTERS 0:00 The year the modern city arrived 0:43 What you are about to see 1:35 By the census: 79,000 to 4.7 million 1:53 The most crowded city on earth 3:34 The door, year by year 3:51 The city that touched the sky 5:37 How high, how fast 5:51 A nickel and the moving city 7:25 What things cost in 1911 7:43 Six dollars a week 8:01 The week that made the blouse 10:10 146 13:16 What they left standing 14:26 Stand here now 15:13 Then and now, by the numbers 15:44 The people are gone. The city remembers. FOOTAGE & PHOTOGRAPHS The main footage is "New York 1911", shot by a crew from the Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern and restored by the Museum of Modern Art from the original nitrate print. It is in the public domain. Its 2017 musical score is NOT - we use the picture only, never that audio. Older films (1899-1906) appear only where the narration is speaking about that earlier moment, and each carries its year on screen.
