The new Eastonmade FHC10 Firewood Hopper Conveyor might be the biggest improvement I've made to my firewood operation since buying the Eastonmade Axis log splitter. After seeing this machine at the Paul Bunyan Show, I knew it was exactly what my woodyard needed!
For years, I've been processing massive tree-service logs with my Eastonmade Axis vertical splitter. The machine is incredibly fast, but there's always been one major bottleneck: getting those heavy rounds onto the log lift. That means dragging, rolling, lifting and wrestling with wood before I can even split it.
Well, NOT ANYMORE!
The Eastonmade FHC10 mechanizes that last manual step. Using my Baumalight mini skid steer, I can scoop up rounds, dump them into the hopper and let the hydraulic conveyor feed them directly to the splitter. It's almost like having a firewood processor, but without the limitations of processing oversized tree-service logs.
In this video, Scott and I bring the FHC10 home, get it positioned inside my 40×40 barn and connect it to the Axis hydraulics. I'll walk you through the setup, measurements, hydraulic connections and the challenges of fitting a 10-foot hopper conveyor into an already crowded workspace.
Then it's time to make FIREWOOD!
We put the new system to work, splitting and sorting firewood into IBC baskets. We also experiment with different ways of loading the hopper, using the Baumalight and Kubota BX2380, and see how the equipment performs during actual production.
I even try running the operation by myself, feeding rounds into the hopper and splitting directly into my dump trailer for a bulk firewood order.
Does the Eastonmade FHC10 actually make firewood production faster?
The early results are promising, but the poor-quality logs I'm currently processing make a fair production-speed comparison difficult. I'll need more time with better material before I can give you accurate numbers.
What I CAN tell you is that the physical workload is dramatically reduced. Instead of dragging heavy rounds across the floor, I'm operating the splitter while the conveyor brings the wood to me. That's a huge improvement in comfort, efficiency and how much work I can comfortably accomplish.
If you're running a firewood business, processing large tree-service logs or looking for ways to improve your log-splitting workflow, this is a machine worth seeing in action.
And there's more happening around the homestead! My DIY wood stove chimney installation is coming up, followed by concrete improvements around the barns as I race to get everything ready before winter.
Thanks for watching Sam's Doing Stuff! There's always another project, another improvement and another opportunity to make things work a little better.
