You pick up the phone — or open the email — and the client is already furious. Your heart pounds, your mind goes blank, and every English phrase you ever knew disappears. We've all been there. This episode is the fix.
Mark and Tina hand you the exact English for handling a difficult client — simply, and with a lot of laughs (and a few of Mark's most embarrassing confessions). How to calm an angry client with your very first sentence (“I completely understand your frustration”). The one tiny word — “but” — that quietly makes everything worse, and what to say instead. The three A's that give you a plan when your mind goes blank: acknowledge, apologize, act. How to say no without losing the client (“I wish I could — but what I can do is…”). And the three types of difficult client — the angry one, the vague one, and the never-happy one — with the exact tool for each.
As always, we say the important phrases slowly, and twice, so they really stick — with a full client-call role-play so you hear it all in action. There's also a short “what the research says” break on the service recovery paradox: the surprising, well-studied reason a problem handled well can make a client more loyal than if nothing had gone wrong at all.
This is the Business English Learning Podcast — real, useful English for work. If it helps, send it to the person on your team who deals with upset clients all day.
Your challenge: next time anyone comes to you upset, start with five words — “I completely understand your frustration” — then pause, and watch the whole conversation change. Then tell us in the comments: what's your worst difficult-client story? The all-caps email? The Friday-night “tiny favor”?
