My 3.4-meter NASA SLS water rocket is flying again!
See the first flight here: • I Build a Giant NASA SLS Water rocket
After five months of building and a first launch that didn't go as planned, it was time for the second launch of my giant SLS water rocket.
The goal of this project is to recreate the staging and recovery systems of a real rocket using mechanical mechanisms, springs, and water pressure — without any electronics.
In just 3.5 seconds, the rocket separates into six parts:
🚀 Two booster separation
🚀 Second stage separation from the core
🚀 Orion spacecraft separation
🚀 Launch abort system deployment
Each section has its own parachute recovery system. Orion even has a recovery sequence inspired by the real spacecraft, with two drogue parachutes followed by three main parachutes.
🎥 In this video:
• The complete launch from different camera angles
• Slow-motion footage of the launch and stage separations
• Mechanical staging and recovery in action
• Parachute deployment and landing sequences
My brother also helped with the project by turning the wooden Orion capsule on a lathe. Check out his channel here: / @lukahandcraft
🔧 What's next?
Before the third launch, I'll make a detailed video explaining how the rocket works, including the mechanical stage separation and parachute deployment systems.
Preparing for a launch, transporting everything, and packing it all away takes a lot of time, so these launches won't happen very often. But there is still plenty to improve and explore!
