Description:
Every year, the cells in our bodies complete millions of divisions, and every single process of mitosis must be perfect. At the heart of this process is separase, the crucial enzyme responsible for cleaving the cohesin ring complex, allowing sister chromatids to separate at the exactly right moment. This process is highly complex and crucial for the cell. As a result, separase must be tightly regulated. At present, its main regulator is securin, but could there be others?
Join PhD. Vaquero D. from the Instituto de Biomedicina de Valencia (IBV-CSIC) to investigate this molecular cold case. Discover how a genetic screen in budding yeast identified the Sak1 kinase as responsible for the phosphorylation and nuclear localisation of separase, and how this breakthrough connects to the human tumor suppressor gene, LKB1.
