AGGIE BAND: The Halftime Drill a Computer Says Is IMPOSSIBLE

More than three hundred cadets march straight through each other on a football field in Texas — a manoeuvre called the four-way cross, which drill-charting software says cannot be done, because it requires two people to stand in the same place at the same second. The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band does it anyway, in wool, in step, without stopping the music. This is the story of where that band came from: a Czech bootmaker named Joseph Holick, who arrived in Bryan, Texas by accident in the 1880s, was hired to make boots for the cadets, and was then offered sixty-five dollars a month to sound Reveille and Taps. He decided two bugle calls a day wasn't enough music for the money, and asked instead if he could start a band. Thirteen people, 1894. From there: Richard Dunn, who had played clarinet in Sousa's Marine Band; the war years, when the ranks were drafted out from under it; Colonel E.V. Adams and the thirty-inch step; the 1947 criss-cross; the night in 1981 it all went wrong at Rice; and the boot shop in Bryan, one hundred and thirty-five years old, still cutting the boots by hand.
