One hundred and thirty-nine days: that was the whole of Catherine of Aragon's first marriage, to Prince Arthur, and in 1529 Henry VIII put it on trial. To end his own twenty years with her, he needed his dead brother to have slept with her. Catalina was promised to Arthur at three, married him in white satin at St Paul's in November 1501 and was a widow at Ludlow by April. Ferdinand assured Rome that his daughter was still a virgin, yet the 1503 dispensation hedged her wedding night with one Latin word, forsan. By 1527 the defendant had arranged his own prosecution: a secret court at Westminster, Cardinal Campeggio carried in with gout, and a legatine court at Blackfriars where the queen knelt at Henry's feet and then walked out. Courtiers in their fifties and sixties testified to a coverlet, a chamber door and a cup of ale, Thomas Boleyn among them. Cavendish's version of her speech is the one usually quoted; M. T. M. Prendergast's 2024 study of the "five Catherines" of Blackfriars explains why others remembered it differently. 0:00 A queen on her knees before two cardinals 0:52 Signed over to an English boy at three 3:26 Six hundred feet of timber at St Paul's 5:35 Ludlow, then a widow worth half a dowry 8:50 Bracelets sold for a black velvet dress 11:46 Leviticus 20:21 and a court in secret 14:22 The crier calls Catherine 16:00 Old men remember a bedroom 18:57 No verdict, a new title, Kimbolton Sources: Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII, vol. 4, no. 5774: the 1529 depositions of Dorset, Shrewsbury, Willoughby, Thomas Boleyn and Nicholas West — https://www.allabouthistory.co.uk/His... ; https://prod.british-history.ac.uk/no...
