In April 2006, Floyd Mayweather turned down $8 million — the biggest purse of his career to that point — to fight Antonio Margarito. Then he paid his own promoter, Bob Arum's Top Rank, $750,000 to exercise a buyout clause and become a promotional free agent. He was not leaving for a better offer. He was paying cash for the right to have no promoter at all.
This documentary breaks down the decision and what it bought. Arum told ESPN at the time that Mayweather had asked for $20 million to fight Oscar De La Hoya, and dismissed it: "He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It's not there." Fourteen months later that fight happened and Mayweather made $25 million on a record-setting pay-per-view.
Across his previous decade at Top Rank — undefeated, titles in multiple weight classes — his reported total earnings were roughly $10 million. The traditional promotional model pays a fighter a fixed guarantee and hands the upside to whoever carries the risk. By buying himself out, forming his own promotional company and taking a share of event revenue instead of a guarantee, Mayweather moved to the other side of that arrangement. For the 2013 Canelo Alvarez fight his reported purse was around $41.5 million, roughly doubling once pay-per-view receipts came in, on an event that set a $150 million pay-per-view revenue record. By his 2017 retirement at 50-0, his career earnings are reported at more than $1.1 billion.
The lesson: the most expensive thing in your career can be the contract you are already in — and buying your way out of it can be the highest-return purchase you ever make.
