How did anyone survive ancient Egypt? A life expectancy near 30 sounds like people rarely grew old. But that number begins at birth—and the greatest danger came long before adulthood.
In this video, we follow the risks of an ordinary Egyptian life: childhood illness, childbirth, water and parasites, food and dental disease, hard labor, injury, and unequal access to care. We also look at the people who did grow old—and why mummies and cemeteries cannot give us one simple answer for all of ancient Egypt.
