According to PADI, the British freighter Thistlegorm sank on October 6, 1941, at the Sha'ab Ali reef in the northern Red Sea, near the entrance to the Gulf of Suez and close to Ras Mohammed National Park. During the night, two German Heinkel He 111 bombers, searching for troop transports, dropped bombs into Hold No. 4, where ammunition was stored. The explosion tore the hull in two and hurled the two steam locomotives stationed on the deck into the air; they fell overboard on opposite sides of the ship. Of the 42 people on board... The bow is better preserved than the stern, and inspections typically begin there. On the upper deck, one finds railway tenders, followed by the captain's bridge and a cabin with a bathtub—a popular spot for photos. According to PADI, holds No. 1 and No. 2 contain BSA and Norton motorcycles, Bedford trucks, armored cars, rifles, rubber boots, aircraft parts, and crates of ammunition. The two steam locomotives, dislodged by the explosion, lie on the seabed next to the hull. The stern is more heavily damaged, though an anti-aircraft gun and the aft gun remain intact.
