Redbirds visit the Freddies in a very highly anticipated match-up early in the 1988 football season. These teams have 100 years of tradition between them! This was a Low scoring affair with a Kicking surprise to 'boot'! With both schools sporting similar uniforms and colors, it was the yearly rivalry at its best. Fredericktown had success between the 20's but couldn't solve the Redbird defensive riddle. This group of Freddies was led by a strong group of Juniors that would return in the Fall of 1989 and make it to the State Semi's (Brad Mast, B. Grubaugh, etc.)! On this Day it was the evolution of the Redbird offense from a Power/Unbalanced only attack to experimenting with the early stages of the run and shoot! On Defense the Birds were led by Tim Vickers with 2 Int's, along with Augenstein, Beachler, and S. Hollinger on the D-Line. LBs/DBs: D. Lance, D. Weber, M. Robinson, S. Rogers, Simmons, Young managed to solve the bizarre Wing T offense of the Freddies. Dan Young and John Simmons both had 1 Interception as well. Mike Robinson had the only 2 TDs for the Birds. (1 Rec/1 Rush) Arnholt spread the ball around to at least 6 different receivers. Cutlip, Vickers, and Robinson leading the way. The Redbirds attempted two FGs and made one. (35 yards by John Simmons/Beans-hold) Onlookers noted 'it would have been good from 50'! Don Stacy pinned the Freddies inside the 15 yd line multiple times throughout the night! Watch until the end to see the Birds go back to the unbalanced, and the O-line really smash their opponents in the 4th quarter! (Offensive line included A. Gaines, H. Huffman, S. Weirick, M. Augenstein, and C. Beachler)
