Welcome to 'Fluid and Particle Mechanics' course ! This lecture introduces cylindrical coordinate systems in the context of fluid mechanics. The goal is to derive the governing equations for fluid flow in cylindrical coordinates, as this will be useful for analyzing flow through a pipe. The lecture begins by reviewing Cartesian coordinates and then defines the unit vectors in cylindrical coordinates: r cap, _ cap, and z cap. The relationships between these unit vectors and those in Cartesian coordinates are then derived. NPTEL Courses permit certifications that can be used for Course Credits in Indian Universities as per the UGC and AICTE notifications.
