Today I bought diesel for nearly $7 per gallon. Again. At this point, $1,000 fill-ups are starting to feel normal — and as an owner-operator truck driver, that's a sentence I never thought I'd be saying. But today's video isn't just about another expensive tank of diesel. It's about the politics surrounding it. When Joe Biden was president and fuel prices were high, Republicans made sure everyone knew exactly who they blamed. "I DID THAT!" stickers with Biden's face appeared on gas pumps across the country. Every increase became a political argument about the president, his policies and the economy. Now Donald Trump is president. Gasoline is expensive. Diesel is at record levels. Truckers, farmers and businesses are absorbing enormous additional costs, and Americans are heading toward the midterm elections with affordability already one of their biggest concerns. Suddenly, the conversation sounds a little different. Presidents don't personally set the price of gasoline or diesel. They didn't under Joe Biden and they don't under Donald Trump. Global oil markets, wars, refinery capacity, supply disruptions, government policy and plenty of other factors all influence what we pay at the pump. But political accountability can't conveniently change depending on who's sitting in the White House. So today I'm showing you what I'm actually paying for diesel on the road, what these prices mean for an owner-operator, and why I think fuel prices are becoming impossible to ignore as we get closer to the midterms.
