You tear down the hornet nest. It had stood there all summer.

That gray football-sized paper nest hanging in your tree sheltered up to 400 ruthless hunters that spent the entire summer scouring your garden for destructive caterpillars, flies, and unwanted yellowjackets. Tearing it down once the leaves drop won't stop next spring's hornets, because you're swinging at an abandoned shell that will never be occupied again. We break down the true biology of the bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata), why destroying empty autumn nests accomplishes nothing, how a single queen constructs an architectural marvel from weathered wood, and the exact 10-foot boundary rule that separates a legitimate sting hazard from a harmless backyard ally. • A mature bald-faced hornet colony houses 100 to 400 predatory workers actively capturing garden pests and other yellowjackets to feed developing larvae. • Female bald-faced hornets possess smooth, unbarbed stingers capable of repeated stings, primarily defending the nest perimeter when approached within roughly 3 feet. • Dolichovespula maculata never reuses an old paper nest; workers and the foundress queen die during late autumn freezes, leaving mated queens to overwinter alone beneath tree bark. 00:00 The Truth Behind That Gray Paper Nest 05:25 Inside a 400-Wasp Hunting Operation 08:05 Inspecting Foliage Damage vs Hunter Presence 12:45 Sting Defense and the 3-Foot Perimeter 16:15 Why Winter Freezes Abandon the Nest 18:45 The 10-Foot Rule for Safe Decisions 🔍 Subscribe for more deep dives into backyard creatures:    / @quietguardians-c2b   👍 Tap like if you learned something new about your yard's natural pest controllers. 💬 Have you ever found an active hornet nest on your property?
