The route begins near the area around the Empire State Building, completed in 1931 during the Great Depression. For decades it remained the tallest building in the world and became one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks. Further south, the walk passes near the historic Flatiron Building, one of the city’s most recognizable skyscrapers. Completed in 1902, the triangular building was considered highly unusual at the time because of its narrow wedge-shaped design. Its steel-frame construction was also one of the earliest examples of modern skyscraper engineering in New York City. The surrounding Flatiron District quickly became a major commercial area in the early 20th century and remains one of Manhattan’s most photographed neighborhoods. As the walk continues downtown, the atmosphere gradually changes from Midtown business districts to the historic streets of Greenwich Village. Unlike Midtown’s strict grid layout, many streets in the Village follow older colonial-era paths that existed before Manhattan’s modern street plan was introduced. The walk finishes near Washington Square Park, home to the famous Washington Square Arch, built in 1892. The surrounding Greenwich Village neighborhood became internationally known for its connection to artists, musicians, writers, and counterculture movements throughout the 20th century. ☕ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL If you enjoy real-time NYC walking videos and want to support future walks around New York City: Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/olfocus Instagram:   / olfocusnyc   ▶️ SUBSCRIBE More real-time walks around New York City:    / olfocus   Your support helps the channel grow 🤍
