Joaquin Murrieta is often hailed as a folk hero. He was the inspiration for “Zorro”, the Robin Hood of Gold Rush California, an outlaw with a heart of gold who was cut down in a blaze of glory. Joaquin Murrieta was indeed a poor Mexican immigrant who had come to seek his fortune in the gold fields of California, only to see his claim and fortune stolen by Anglo miners. He had then vowed to take his vengeance, and turned to a life of crime. But his crimes were far more violent than his legend betrayed. Murrieta and his band cut a swath of violence and bloodshed throughout the whole of California, killing and robbing from Anglos, Chinese and Mexicans alike. In the end, Murrieta and his would take more lives than Jesse James, Billy The Kid, John Wesley Hardin or any other Old West outlaw.
