It’s been about three months since I last rode Amba, as the hot weather on my days off was too much for both of us. Thankfully, her hormonal seasons seem to be behind her now and no longer affect our daily routines. This morning was cooler than usual, with a lovely breeze, so I took the chance to see how she was being mounted and ridden, and whether any issues or triggers remained. Everything went well—just walking, nothing too exciting—checking if she still remembered what we’d done before. They usually don’t forget, and I kept everything light with leg and seat aids, keeping her responsive. I’ve never liked whips or spurs and have never felt the need for them with horses I’ve started or restarted.
Simple things like putting on hoof oil was a trigger, every time I attempted to brush a hoof with hoof dressing she would move away if loose or fidget if tied. In racing, horses would have hoof oil applied on race days only, this association became a trigger, she's much more relaxed about it now. During this hot dry weather I like to use a hoof dressing to keep them moist when needed and this association with race days has now ceased. Even being ridden has had to become a pleasure not lots of pressure, mounting, moving off, defensive behaviour all triggers from her racing days. Most people won't understand why it's taken me so long to get her to become a relaxed 'hack'. Her emotional state was so far gone that I needed help with her and to learn a whole new way of training horses that puts the horse first not the rider.
