Description ISE GRAND SHRINE — Before and After the Shikinen Sengu A quiet visual journey through Ise Grand Shrine, photographed between 2008 and 2013, before and after the 62nd Shikinen Sengu. Every twenty years, the shrine buildings and torii gates of Ise are rebuilt and renewed in one of Japan’s oldest continuing traditions. This visual archive follows Ise through that cycle of renewal. From the fresh green of spring in 2008, through late summer and winter in 2011, to the quiet signs of preparation in 2012—and finally, the newly rebuilt shrine buildings in December 2013. The buildings change. The seasons change. The forest appears unchanged. Yet from the moment the new shrine buildings are completed, they too slowly begin to become part of the forest. The cycle begins again.
