Mt. Ontake, also known as Ontakesan, is a prominent stratovolcano located in the Chubu region of Japan. Rising to an impressive height of 3,067 meters (10,062 feet), it stands as the second-highest volcano in the country, drawing both avid hikers and spiritual seekers to its awe-inspiring slopes.
As with any mountain, hikers must be well-prepared and mindful of the weather conditions, as they can change rapidly, especially at higher altitudes. Proper gear, including sturdy footwear, warm clothing, and plenty of water and snacks, is essential for a safe and enjoyable hike.
Starting from Kiso-Fukushima station, there is a local bus available three times a day (at 8:40, 10:40, and 14:00). Just note that the ticket office is located on the opposite side of the station, so make sure to plan your schedule accordingly.
