Avasarala Kanyakumari was born on 31 December 1952 to Avasarala Ramaratnam and Jayalakshmi at Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh. Her mother was a veena artist at All India Radio, and the parents encouraged Kanya and her sisters to learn music. The young girl made her violin debut as an accompanist and a soloist about 50 years ago. The family shifted to Chennai in 1969. She was fortunate to be a disciple of 3 great legendary gurus, Ivaturi Vijeswara Rao, M. Chandrasekaran and M. L. Vasanthakumari. she has received innumerable accolades and praise from audiences worldwide and discerning critics for her innovation, accompaniment and solo performances while at the same time strictly adhering to the Carnatic music tradition. Needless to say it is her dedication and sincere hard work along with the able guidance of her gurus. Her extensive experience spanning more than 4 decades combined with a sharp acumen and fine sense of creativity has earned her a distinct place. She has evolved her own style of melodious playing and silken bowing which closely resembles vocal music rhapsodizing audiences all over.
In this krithi Thyagaraja Swamy humbly confesses his sins, acknowledging his pride, worldly attachments, and neglect of devotion. Realising the preciousness of human birth, he surrenders to Lord Rama, seeking divine grace, forgiveness, and protection from his sinful ways. He begins by addressing Lord Rama as the divine protector, the Lord of the celestials and the one who transcends the limitations of human speech and thought,
Oh Rama, I have committed countless sins without hesitation. Who in this world will rescue me? I have been a slave to evil thoughts and deeds at every moment. I failed to recognise your omnipresence throughout the universe.
From my childhood, I neglected the path of devotion and the bliss of singing Your praises. Instead, I flattered others for the sake of wealth and livelihood, foolishly believing that worldly comforts alone constituted happiness.
Through my speech, I sought to attract and please ordinary people and women. In my arrogance, I considered myself equal to great musicians and eminent men of learning. I became steeped in pride and mistakenly believed that land, property, wealth, servants and other worldly possessions were permanent.
I forgot to worship your lotus feet and failed to keep your divine face in my heart. Instead, I sought the company and favour of arrogant people. I did not turn away from evil thoughts and desires; rather, I became tormented by them.
I failed to recognise the rare and precious opportunity of human birth and wasted my life as a slave to sensual desires, pride and other weaknesses. Although born into a respected class, I engaged in activities unworthy of my calling.
Oh Rama, Having recognized my many shortcomings, I surrender to you. Who else but you can rescue me from my sinful ways?
