In this video, Dr BVA Ranga Reddy, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals Jubilee Hills, explains why heart attacks are increasingly affecting people with no obvious risk factors. He said South Asians tend to carry high levels of visceral fat around the internal organs even when they appear lean, and this raises the risk of diabetes and early heart blockages. Family history adds to this risk, particularly when parents or grandparents had heart attacks or cardiac arrest before the age of 60. Dr Reddy said smoking speeds up clot formation even in people with blockages as low as 30 to 50 per cent, which can trigger sudden heart attacks or lasting heart damage. He named stress and a sedentary lifestyle as added risk factors, alongside diabetes and high cholesterol. He also said women lose some of their natural protection against heart disease once diabetes and hypertension set in earlier in life, a pattern he's now seeing more often among working women. On screening, Dr Reddy recommended a lipid profile and apolipoprotein test to assess risk, along with a CT calcium score for further evaluation. A CT coronary angiogram or conventional angiogram follows when these results raise concern. He noted that a normal CT angiogram doesn't rule out every risk, since conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and congenital heart anomalies don't always show up on standard scans.
