On December 4, 1943, USS Sailfish pursued the Japanese escort carrier Chuyo through a typhoon off Japan, returning for three torpedo attacks before finally sinking her. Follow Commander Robert E. Ward and his crew as radar tracking, dangerous seas, and Japanese destroyers shaped a relentless World War II submarine engagement. This Pacific War story also traces Sailfish’s earlier life as USS Squalus, the submarine rescued and salvaged after sinking in 1939, and reveals the tragedy unknown to the attackers: Chuyo was carrying American prisoners of war from USS Sculpin, the sister submarine that had helped locate Squalus during the rescue. Explore the tactics, technology, and human cost behind this remarkable chapter of U.S. Navy history.
