One of the most common challenges adventure riders face—especially on taller, heavier bikes—is simply getting a confident foot on the ground when stopping.
And it’s not just beginners. Even experienced riders get caught out when the terrain changes, the ground is uneven, or you stop slightly off-camber.
Here’s what usually happens: you roll to a stop, try to put both feet down, the bike starts to tip, and suddenly all that weight shifts the wrong way.
That’s where drops happen. That’s where confidence takes a hit. And sometimes, that’s where injuries occur.
🏍 The Problem: “A Framing” Your Stop
Many riders naturally stop like they would on the ROAD—both feet down, bike upright, flat ground.
But OFF-ROAD riding rarely gives you that option!
One side might be downhill
The other side could have a rut or hole
The bike might be loaded with gear
And you may not even be able to reach the ground evenly
If you force both feet down or lean the bike to compensate, you actually increase the chance of losing it.
🔑 The Solution: The Seat Slide Technique
Simple but powerful:
👉 As you come to a stop, slide your hips slightly off the seat toward your preferred footing side.
This helps you:
Keep the bike more upright and balanced
Get your body closer to the ground naturally
Avoid that sudden “tip and load” moment
Example: if your left side is high or out of reach, don’t fight it—shift your body slightly and confidently plant your strong foot.
⛰️ On Hills, It’s Critical
If you’re stopping on a slope:
Use your uphill foot first
Keep the clutch in and control the bike
Stay stable and lean slightly into the hill, not away from it
Get this wrong and gravity takes over fast.
⚠️ Why It Matters
This isn’t just convenience—it’s safety and control.
It helps you:
Prevent dropped bikes
Avoid ankle and leg injuries
Build real confidence on uneven terrain
Make every stop more predictable
Campsites, trails, and soft ground catch riders out all the time.
🧠 Key Takeaway
Every stop matters.
Don’t just throw your feet down and hope.
👉 Slide your body
👉 Choose your footing side
👉 Stay balanced
👉 Control the stop
It’s a small change—but it completely transforms how stable and confident your riding feels.
