Stone Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Staffordshire, and around eight miles south of Stoke-on-Trent, is the town of Stone. According to legend, during the 7th century AD two Anglo-Saxon princes, Rufin and Wulfad, were murdered by their father Wulfhere of Mercia for having converted to Christianity. Over their grave was a cairn of stones. Wulfhere is then said to have been filled with remorse, and to have founded a church on the site of these marker stones - which would ultimately give the settlement which developed around it its name. In 1135 the church at Stone was rebuilt as an Augustinian priory dedicated to St. Mary and St. Wulfad. This was destroyed in the 16th century during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The priory church then became the parish church up until the 1750s when it collapsed, and was subsequently rebuilt during the same decade, with a late 19th century chancel. In 1251 a market charter was granted to Stone by Henry III. The town's geographic location on the London to Chester road gave it a thriving coaching inn industry during the Georgian era. The Georgians were also responsible for the construction of the Trent and Mersey Canal. This opened in the 1770s, and provided a significant boost to the pottery industry of neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent, and by extension, to the development of Stone. Other historic industries in the town include brewing and shoemaking. In 1848 the railway arrived in Stone, although it was replaced during the following year with the station that stands today.
