What does it take to measure rice yield potential in the Philippines? In this video, Patricio Grassini (University of Nebraska–Lincoln) visits PhilRice in Nueva Ecija, the rice bowl of the Philippines. There he talks with Elmer Alosnos about two field experiments that are part of the Yield Potential Network (YPN). In this video: • The two experiments: a rice–rice system and a rice–maize system • How the trials test different fertilizer rates, from full rates to no fertilizer • The challenges of growing rice in the wet season (June–October): typhoons, heavy rains, strong winds, pests and diseases • Why yield gaps are larger in the wet season, and how the risk of lodging makes farmers more conservative with fertilizer • Why closing yield gaps requires agronomy adapted to each local climate and context About the Yield Potential Network The YPN is a global network of agronomists, researchers and local experts who measure crop yield potential through coordinated field experiments. All experiments follow shared protocols, so results from different crops and countries can be compared. The network is part of the Yield Potential and Yield Gap Atlas (YPYGA).
