One jazz exercise can improve three important areas of your playing: technique, harmonic understanding, and your ability to think ahead while improvising.
In this lesson, I'm breaking down two pieces of jazz vocabulary I transcribed from the legendary Oscar Peterson and showing you how to turn them into powerful daily practice exercises.
We'll explore how these licks use chord tones, major triads, enclosures, and resolutions, and how practicing them in all 12 keys can improve your facility, accuracy, and understanding of harmony.
But more importantly, I'll show you how to take this vocabulary beyond simply memorizing licks and actually apply it to your improvisation over real chord changes.
The goal isn't just to learn more jazz licks. It's to understand what you're playing so you can use that vocabulary creatively in different musical situations.
