The Only Ship Every Pirate Was Terrified Of

For a few years after 1719, no merchant crew that spotted black sails on the horizon was willing to fight. The flag was an offer: surrender and live, resist and no one is spared. One man turned that offer into the most successful piracy the Atlantic ever recorded, taking around 400 ships in under four years, more than Blackbeard or any name that outlived him. Then the Crown sent a single warship to hunt him down. HMS Swallow carried 50 guns and a crew of about 280 men, and she was unremarkable on paper, just another ship on anti-piracy patrol. Her captain, Chaloner Ogle, worked the sightings off the Guinea coast the way a navigator reads a chart, following burned hulls and freed prisoners until the trail ran to Cape Lopez. In February 1722 he let the pirates chase him, turned, and put a full broadside into the ship that came after. Five days later he sailed back to find Roberts's flagship still at anchor. Roberts was cut down by grapeshot within minutes, dressed in crimson and gold and wearing the diamond cross he'd taken from the King of Portugal. His crew struck their colors that afternoon, and the largest pirate trial in history ended with 52 men hanged at Cape Coast Castle. He got the short life he always said he wanted. The ship that did it, HMS Swallow, was later broken up for scrap, remembered only in the records it left behind.
