THE WOOD PROPHETS - Bass Shakuhachi Quartet
Out of the deep woods comes a chamber group like no other. Composting “styles” and morphing boundaries, they give voice to a rare and musky instrument: bass shakuhachi, the Bigfoot of flutes. This low bamboo flute group plays original multi-movement compositions by Cornelius Boots, resurrecting a visceral sense of the ancient days of the Earth.
Recipients of a 2020 InterMusic SF Musical Grant, their five-movement saga, Wood Prophecy, tastes like moss, bark and ferns with elemental notes of Zen meditation, rural blues, jubilee gospel, Funkadelic and sacred Renaissance polyphony.
The return of the rustic, virtuoso woodwinder, transmitting the spirit of primeval nature. Their second mutli-movement saga is called Bigfoot Revelation and can be listend to only on bandcamp: https://corneliusboots.bandcamp.com/a...

Cornelius Boots: Artist Bio 2026
Cornelius Boots is an internationally active composer-performer and lifelong woodwind innovator. He is a licensed grandmaster of Zen shakuhachi, creator of progressive rock, jazz and blues styles and repertoire, and a former bass clarinet pioneer. As Philadelphia’s premiere rustic virtuoso, Boots’ purpose is to transmit the spirit of primeval nature through the rigorous artistry and unique tone of the bass shakuhachi flute, honoring the dual regional lineages of John Coltrane (cosmically creative musicianship) and the Wissahickon hermits (devotional nature spirituality). Wild nature flute – hermit jazz.
The founder and composer of Black Earth Shakuhachi School, Boots has received multiple grants, awards, commissions and made many recordings. He was a featured performer and lecturer at World Shakuhachi Festivals 2016 (Prague), 2018 (London) and 2025 (Texas), World Bamboo Congress 2018 (Mexico), Clarinetfests 2008, 2011 and 2013 and his Sony E3 2018 Ghost of Tsushima live performance has over 6 million views on YouTube.
