Whitewater Falls, NC — The Trailhead Sign Is Wrong (Tallest Waterfall in the East)

The sign at the Whitewater Falls trailhead says it's half a mile to the falls. It isn't — the upper overlook is less than a quarter mile away on a paved path. And the 411-foot height everyone quotes is disputed too. I filmed this on location. Everything below is what I found on the ground. WHERE IT IS Off NC-281 south of Cashiers, in Nantahala National Forest. About 90 minutes from Asheville. This is the same water that runs under the footbridge at Silver Run Falls a few miles upstream. Here it meets the Blue Ridge Escarpment — the sharp drop between the mountains and the Piedmont — and falls off the edge of it. PARKING & FACILITIES Proper paved parking lot. Self-pay parking fee — bring cash. Picnic area, shelters and flush toilets, which makes this the best-equipped waterfall stop I've filmed. THE WALK Paved path, less than a quarter mile to the upper overlook. Not flat, but paved the whole way — reachable for a strong-armed wheelchair user. Then 154 wooden steps down to a lower viewing deck. The view from the bottom is considerably better. The steps get slick from mist and rain, and it's a real climb back up. ABOUT THE HEIGHT The Forest Service calls it 411 feet and the highest waterfall east of the Rockies. That claim is disputed — the actual height is likely closer to 350-400 feet, and Crabtree Falls in Virginia, Amicalola Falls in Georgia and Glassmine Falls in NC all contend for the title. Whatever the number, it's the tallest in North Carolina and it's spectacular. WHY YOU CAN'T GO TO THE BASE There is no trail to the bottom. Reaching it means a dangerous scramble, and people have died here. There's a second reason. Rare plants grow in the spray zone, including a pale yellow trillium that survives at only a handful of sites in this watershed. Walking through it destroys it. Two overlooks. That's the waterfall. TIMING The Forest Service says visitor volume is extremely high midday and on holidays, and recommends morning or evening. They're right. THERE'S MORE OF IT The river crosses into South Carolina and drops another 400 feet at Lower Whitewater Falls. Same river, two states, over 800 feet of falling water.
