Every Suppressor Type Explained (And Which One Is Actually Quiet)

There's no such thing as a "silencer" — not the movie kind. A real suppressed rifle is still loud enough to make you flinch. So how close has anyone actually gotten to quiet? We rank all 7 types of military suppressor from loudest to quietest — flow-through, monocore, reflex, baffle stack, integral, wipe-type and the one at #1 — and show what each design does to the gas, what it costs the soldier carrying it, and where it was actually used: Hiram Percy Maxim's 1909 silencer, the WWII Welrod and De Lisle, the Navy's Vietnam-era "Hush Puppy," the MP5SD, the Soviet PB pistol and VSS Vintorez, and the Mk 23 SOCOM pistol. You'll hear real, unsuppressed and suppressed gunfire from U.S. military ranges, and see 3D cutaways of what happens inside each can.
