BobBlast #582 Painting Reflections, Part Two   Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! This BobBlast is Part two—Painting Reflections on a floral vase. Part One was a lesson—painting reflections on a solid ceramic vase. Part Two, the lesson is about painting reflections on a clear glass vase.   Follow the same principles as with the solid vase: To paint the illusion of a clear glass three-dimensional vase, go back to painting a ball with the light source strongly shining from the left side, and showing a shadow on the right side. Remember what I always say—“dark against light, dark against light”—the contrast between the wall, the vase and the table is what gives it depth and dimension. Establish the light source, coming from the left side, adding contrast, drama and a shadow.   Painting a clear glass vase on a table: Paint the vase shape, add a table edge. Remember that your elliptical ovals will all have the same curve. Make these curves identical. •The top of the vase •The bottom to the vase •The water inside the vase   The light reflection comes from the direction of your light source. You will see the wall color and the edge of the table color through glass vase. Softly paint the back edge of the table so it shows through the glass. Show the concave curve.   Add stems to your clear glass vase on a table: •Paint what you see… I exaggerate it •Water naturally causes the stems to look broken, or distorted •Soften the back edge of the table. The vase will appear to be in focus •Add the hot spot on the thick part of the glass bottom, with a bit of the hot spot reflecting in the shadow All the while, I am redefining the lights and darks of the painting. Use your light source to shine brightly on one focal point. The color will pop! Remember… the shadow color is generally the complementary color of the light source.
