Welcome back to our West Coast adventure!
After an unforgettable stay at Kwass se Baai, we packed up camp and continued our journey north along one of the most rugged and beautiful stretches of the South African coastline.
Our route took us past Varswaterkamp, Bamboeskamp, Skuinsklip, Koringkorrelbaai, Skuinsbaai Noord and Boulderbaai. Every kilometre offered breathtaking scenery, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the endless Namaqualand landscape on the other. This is truly a place where the journey is every bit as rewarding as the destination.
One of the highlights of the day was visiting the Spoegrivier Seal Colony. Watching hundreds of Cape fur seals lounging on the rocks and playing in the surf was an incredible experience. The sound, the smell, and the sheer number of seals make this a stop you won't soon forget.
Not every adventure goes exactly as planned, though!
On our way towards the Spoegrivier Caves, we noticed the trailer's left wheel had developed a slow leak. After some investigating, we found the culprit—a thick thorn lodged in the sidewall of the tyre. Three tyre plugs later, we finally managed to stop the leak and were back on the road. It's all part of overlanding, and sometimes these unexpected repairs become part of the adventure.
Of course, we also made time for a little West Coast fun. During one of our breaks, we held a traditional "Spoegdrol" competition—using antelope droppings, just for laughs. If you've never heard of it before, you're definitely missing out on one of the more unusual South African camping traditions!
As we continued our journey, we came across a deceased springbok next to the road—a reminder that nature can be both beautiful and harsh.
Eventually, we reached the fascinating Spoegrivier Caves, another hidden gem along this spectacular coastline. Exploring these ancient caves and taking in the rugged surroundings was well worth the visit.
With the day's adventures behind us, we made our way to Hondeklipbaai, where we would spend the next two nights exploring the area.
Before settling in, we drove past the famous Hondeklip itself. Ironically, despite its name meaning "Dog Stone," we all agreed it doesn't really resemble a dog at all—but it's still an iconic landmark with an interesting history.
Another incredible day on the West Coast comes to an end. Thanks for joining us on this journey. If you enjoyed the adventure, don't forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and join us for the next episode as we continue exploring the rugged beauty of South Africa's West Coast.
