This piece is the first movement of a four movement Sonata where Rheinberger seems to have set out deliberately to write a piece in which the interest is chiefly melodic and harmonic, with very little fugal writing. The Fantasia is written in sonata form with some free and unexpected touches which showcase the skill and refinement of the composer.
